DIY Garage Door Replacement

DIY Garage Door Replacement

Installing a new garage door is a possible do-it-yourself project for people who are handy around the house, yet there are several factors to consider before performing the task successfully.  Garage doors are built to be mechanically stable for functionality and safety which is why it is important to follow these guidelines to perform a garage door installation safely.

If the garage door is made of steel, make sure to get a steel stiffener before starting the job.  Steel stiffeners are necessary because most steel garage doors are made of 24 or 25 gauge steel.  Steel stiffeners are installed at the top edge of the garage door to prevent the door from jamming.  The stiffener must be bought separately and installed because door kits normally do not include a steel stiffener.  Garage doors include panel assembly instructions in the manual from the manufacturer.

Another step that must be taken before installing the door is choosing and installing an opener that works with the door.  Garage door openers have different levels of power and weight capabilities making different styles of openers better for different types of garage doors.  Door manufacturers can offer guidance on which types of openers work best for different door types.  Openers also need to be installed differently depending on the type.  Opener manufacturers usually provide installation suggestions.  The last step to take before actually performing the installation of the opener or door is to disable all other fixtures within the garage that could interfere with the process.

Once the opener is installed and secured, the trolley connected to the lift motor must be connected to the center of the door.  It is important that the door and motor are centered with each other to avoid twisting or binding the door.  Once the door is connected to the lift motor, the counterbalance system must be adjusted to stabilize the door every foot it is raised.  If the counterbalance system is not adjusted properly, the door may slam abruptly or may not open if the lift motor stops working.  The door should be adjusted so that the rubber gasket along the bottom of the door presses firmly against the ground to prevent seepage.  If the springs need adjusting, make sure to review proper guidelines on safe spring handling or hire a professional to adjust the springs.

The final step after installing the door and opener is to make sure that all components are functioning properly together without binding the garage door.  Keeping all components in alignment will ensure the functionality of the opening mechanism as well as extend the life of the garage door.  Following the proper guidelines can make garage door installation a do-it-yourself project.

How To Install a Garage Door?

When embarking on installing your own garage door, it’s vital to discern what kind of garage door you’re trying to install.  Not all garage doors are created equal – if your door has a typical torsion-spring system, stop, drop, and call in a professional (see Garage Door Repair).  A tension-spring system garage door is held in place by extreme tension, which can be very dangerous if you don’t have the right equipment or don’t fully understand the workings of the mechanisms involved (see how to repair garage door springs?) While installing a garage door is a wholly doable project and many people find great DIY success with it, don’t put yourself and your family at unnecessary risk!
